Allen Richard Saltus, Jr. passed away on June 18, 2026 at the age of 83 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. He was born in Middletown, Connecticut on June 16, 1943 and grew up in Durham, CT until his junior year of high school when his family moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL. He graduated from Stranahan High School (1961) and then graduated from Florida Atlantic University. He was married to Martha Winnicki Saltus on June 8, 1969 and went on to finish his master’s degree from Florida State University. He had three children, Allen Richard Saltus, III, Kristen Saltus Mayfield, and Ali Saltus Aaron.
After moving to Louisiana, Allen bought a house and land and lived and worked in Prairieville, LA for 30 plus years. He later moved to Jackson, LA and became very content with helping in the Jackson historical scene. Allen built a life centered on underwater archeology (Archeological Research & Survey, Inc), family, teaching classes at Southeastern University, and his numerous historical societies that he worked with & helped chair through the years (Madisonville Maritime Museum, Jackson Assembly, Jackson Historic Society, Jackson Tourism Enhancement Committee).
Allen was survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Martha Winnicki Saltus, his son, Allen Saltus, III, and his daughters, Kristen Mayfield & Ali Aaron (Adam Aaron). He had 6 beautiful grandchildren, Allen Saltus, IV (Jessica Saltus), Brooke Saltus, Madeline Mayfield, Mitchell Mayfield, Triston Aaron, and Cece Aaron. He also leaves behind his younger siblings Gary Saltus and Jan Snyder (Doug Snyder). There are also numerous nieces and nephews in the Winnicki & Saltus families. Allen was preceded in death by his father and mother, Allen & Alice Saltus, and his son-in-law, Scott Mayfield. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on July 18 at the Art Studio 1756 Charter St. in Jackson, LA from 11 to 2. Allen’s friendship, love, passion for history, and willingness to always help others will continue in the lives of all who knew him.
