IN LOVING MEMORY OF BERTHA FAYE WELLS CUMMINGS
"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to reap that which is planted." Ecclesiates 3:1-7
Mrs. Bertha Cummings was born July 16, 1941, in Prentiss, Mississippi. She moved to Baton Rouge, La., and married Rev. Owen Wilson, Jr. From that union, three children were born: Delores Emerson, Carol E. Pitts, and Owen Wilson, III. Bertha's second husband was Costello Robinson, and she later married Steve Cummings.
Bertha, as a young adult, joined Rose of Sharon Baptist Church along with her husband and children. Pastored by Rev. Isaiah Mitchell, she was a faithful member of the choir. Years later, she joined Bethleham Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess under the pastorship of Rev. Donald Turner. Much later, she joined Oasis Christian Church, pastored by Bishop Charles E. and First Lady Gladys Wallace, whom she loved dearly. Bertha was a high school graduate. She worked as a sitter for years. Bertha was a very friendly and very outspoken lady. Her favorite TV show was "Family Feud." Her favorite pastime was weekly bingo, and she was very displeased when she didn't win. She enjoyed gospel music; one of her favorite songs was "I'm Blessed," by Rev. Clay Evans.
Bertha, in her younger years, ran a store from her home where delicious food and candy could be purchased. No one in her neighborhood went hungry. If she could lend a helping hand, she would. If you weren't afraid, she would play and beat you in a game of spades. Even near the end, she would still play to win. When it got too difficult at home, Bertha moved to Baton Rouge Health Care Center in Baker, La.
