Brenda Caston Zumo, departed this world on August 20, 2026, in Denham Springs, a cherished mother, sister, grandmother, and friend whose love left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Brenda was born in Panama Canal, Panama to Johnny Caston Sr. and Lula Mae Lewis Caston. After high school, she went on to pursue her career and earned her barber degree. She served her community for over 20 years as a talented barber, owning Brenda’s Beauty and Barber Shop on Evangeline Street in Baton Rouge. Her business was more than a place of work, it was a gathering space filled with laughter and good stories that left her clients feeling cared for and uplifted. She even used her caring hands to do makeup and hair for the deceased, offering dignity and peace to families in their most difficult moments.
Beyond her career, Brenda thrived on self-care and the little joys of life. She delighted in shopping, getting her nails done, indulging her sweet tooth with chocolate, and sipping coffee or Coke. Evenings often found her unwinding in front of the TV watching YouTube with her beloved fur baby, Roxie, nestled close by. To know Brenda was to know joy: she brought lighthearted humor wherever she went, always quick with a joke and ready to share a smile. Brenda’s early years as an “army brat” gave her a spirited outlook on life and the ability to adapt with grace and resilience. Above all, family was the center of her life, a source of joy, laughter, and strength. Her heart was truly in her home, where gatherings with those dearest to her meant everything. Those who knew and loved Brenda will forever remember her as a source of joy, a woman who left everyone just a bit happier than when she found them. While her physical presence has left us, her spirit carries forward in the lives of those she touched and the countless heartfelt memories she created.
Brenda is survived by her loving daughter, Shain Hunter; beloved grandchildren: Kimberly Searcy (Patrick), Brittney Fajoni, Alisha Fajoni, Karen Craft, Telly Hunter, Jr. (Leah), Serena Hunter, Paige Wilkinson (Ryan), Savanna Richardson (Flash), Kiresten Hunter and Telisha Hunter; siblings, Norma Jean Minter, and David Caston, Sr. and son-in-law, Jason Schlatre. She is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her long-time partner, Harold Manuel; parents, Johnny Caston, Sr. and Lula Mae Lewis Caston; her son, Shawn Fajoni; daughter, Shan Schlatre; sister, Judy Kinchen, and her brother Johnny Caston, Jr.
Friends and relatives are invited to join the family in celebrating her life on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at Seale Funeral Home in Denham Springs for a visitation from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM with service beginning at 12:00 PM. A graveside service will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory at 1:30 PM.
Pallbearers will be Telly Hunter, Jr., Telly Hunter Sr., Bryson Bruce, Patrick Searcy, Jamarcus Brown, Johnny Caston III. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremy Walker, Genesis Hunter, and Tristen Hunter.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Baton Rouge for their compassion and care during Brenda’s final days. The family would also like to thank Seale Funeral Home, Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, long-time family friend Chasiti Landry, as well as all family and friends for their care and kindness during this very difficult time.
