George M. Gilliland, age 60, of Independence, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at his home on September 5, 2026.

George was a hardworking man who knew his way around a diesel engine and made his living as a diesel mechanic. He believed in working with his hands, taking care of his own, and enjoying the simple things in life. When he wasn’t working, George could often be found doing what he loved most—fishing, hunting, and spending time with the people he loved. Above all else, his family meant the world to him.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Margaret Gilliland; two sons, John Gilliland and his wife, Morgan, and Austin Gilliland and Olivia; four children by love, Candi Reid and Kenneth, Cody Sullivan and Sherie, Chris Marcus and Destiny, and Chance Marcus and Leighanne. He was also a proud grandfather to Kennedy, Jensen, and Waylon, and was blessed with sixteen step-grandchildren.

George is also survived by his two sisters, Ontine “Tina” Davis and Tenita Marche; his brother, Glen Gilliland, Jr. and his wife, Sylvia; one niece, Brittiany Gilliland; and five nephews, Joshua Davis and his wife, Tracey, Gregory Gilliland, Gayle Dugas, Adrian Gilliland, and Sam Foster, along with many other family members and friends who will carry his memory with them always.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen Gilliland, Sr. and Edith Dedon.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Joseph Hospice for the care, compassion, and kindness shown to George and his family during such a difficult time.

Mr. Billy Gordon will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

A visitation will be held at Seale Funeral Service on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, beginning at 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m.
