Hughie Earlin Alford

d. June 16, 2025

Hughie E. Alford, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, following a brief illness. He was 89 years old.

Born on October 10, 1935, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Hughie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his military service, he built a long and successful career at Shell Chemical in Geismar, where he later retired.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sue Herbert Alford. The day before his passing, they celebrated both their anniversary and Father’s Day together—a meaningful reminder of the life they shared.

Hughie is also survived by his three daughters: Terri (David) Ketterer, Tracy (Garry) Talbert, and Julie (Andrew) Norris; grandchildren: Jason Benoit, Hannah Benoit, Bobby (Rose) Ketterer, Daniel Ketterer, Matthew White, Lauren White, Ja’Cobey Lee, Adam Norris, and Ryan Norris; and one great-grandchild, Ryatt White.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hubbard Alford and Lavelle Ferguson Alford, his brother Jesse Alford, sister Sandra Alford Cumberland, and two nephews, Michael Herbert and Michael Gray.

He is also survived by his siblings: Jerry (Betty) Alford, Billie (Paul) Peden, and Judy Gray; his brother-in-law Bill (Monell) Herbert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Known by many as a kind-hearted, generous friend and family man, Hughie was also well-known for his love of cooking. Whether it was frying fish, making jambalaya, or preparing his famous “Pop’s omelets” for his children and grandchildren, his food was always made with care and shared with love.

A passionate LSU Tiger fan, Hughie followed the football, baseball, softball, and women’s gymnastics teams with unwavering enthusiasm. In years past, he enjoyed spontaneous trips to the old Alex Box Stadium, where you could still walk up and buy a ticket at the gate. He and Sue also held basketball season tickets for many years.

As a proud “girl dad,” Hughie taught his daughters how to camp, fish, and play ball. He even coached the softball teams for his daughters and niece, creating lasting memories and strong family bonds.

In retirement, Hughie found joy in the simple pleasures of life—working in his yard, and tending to his two fish ponds: one home to his prized koi, and the other stocked with bream, bass, and catfish.

Visitation will be held at Abundant Life Church in Denham Springs on Thursday, June 19, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 1:00 PM. Burial will take place on Friday, June 20, at 11:00 AM at Louisiana National Cemetery.

Hughie will be remembered for his love of family, his generosity, and the countless lives he touched through quiet acts of kindness. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, service, and heart.
