Janelle Louise King Carrier, of Denham Springs, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, at the age of 95. As a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dedicated educator, Janelle devoted her life to those around her. After graduating from Pine Grove High School, she earned an education degree at Southeastern Louisiana University and then began an accomplished teaching career in Livingston Parish. Although she had fond memories of her time at Frost School, Denham Springs Elementary, and Northside Elementary, Janelle was especially proud of her years as a member of Southside Elementary’s inaugural faculty. She often joked about how she “went in with the first load of bricks.” Janelle eventually retired from Southside Elementary after serving not only as a teacher but also as their principal. She loved to share heartfelt stories and amusing anecdotes from her days in the classroom and time spent sponsoring the 4-H club. Her connection to education didn’t end when she retired, however, and in 2013, she was inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame. Janelle also maintained membership in the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators, the Retired Teachers’ Association, and the Livingston Parish Retired Teachers' Association.
An avid traveler, Janelle and her husband, Dewey, often spent their summer vacations and early retirement roaming North America in their RV with the Denham Springs Camping Club. Her grandchildren fondly recall the excitement of seeing that enormous motorhome pull up with their “Mawmaw” behind the wheel. Janelle was also a longstanding member of First United Methodist Church in Denham Springs until her health precluded her from attending services regularly.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Carrier and his wife, Kim; daughter, Jan Carrier Pierce and her husband, John; daughter, Jan Smith Webb; granddaughter, Ashley Carrier Watson; grandsons, Justin, Jason, and Dylan Carrier, Shaun and Patrick Pierce, Jeremy and Joshua Webb; and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dewey H. Carrier; her parents, James Howard and Geneva Tiner King; siblings, Peggy King Schuster, JD King, and Edward Ray King; and two infant children, Barbara Carrier and James Carrier.
Janelle’s family would like to express special appreciation for her nurse, Judy Impson, and the entire staff at Harvest Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
A memorial service honoring her life will be held at Pine Grove Methodist Church on Monday, October 20, 2025. Visitation will begin at 9:30 and continue until the service at 11:00. Interment to follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Justin Carrier, Jason Carrier, Dylan Carrier, Shaun Pierce, Patrick Pierce, Jeremy Webb, Joshua Webb, and Justin Watson. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Janelle Carrier’s name to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Denham Springs First United Methodist Church, or the Dementia Society of America.
