Listen to Obituary

Katherine “Katy” Wells, age 74, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026, while on her last shift as a school crossing guard before God called her home.

Katy was the beloved wife of Glen P. Wells for 53 years. She was a devoted and proud mother who loved her jobs, her family, her friends, and her community.

Katy is survived by her children: Lori (Scott) Browning, Chris Wells, Craig Wells, Brandon Wells Davis Browning, her sister Genny White, sister-in-law Paula Reese, brother-in-law James Myler, granddaughter Chana (Brook) Giacone, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband Glen P. Wells, son Michael Wells, parents George E. Reese and Lou Anna McPherson, sisters Joan Reese, Sue Myler, Natalie “Cooky” Reese, brother John “Buddy” Reese and brother-in-law Roy White.

For almost 40 years Katy served as a crossing guard at Seventh Ward Elementary, later also continuing her service at Gray’s Creek Elementary. She was employed as a paraeducator and computer lab manager at Seventh Ward Elementary for 36 years. She also worked at the YMCA as a manager. Katy loved her jobs and the people she saw every day. Generations of children, parents, bus drivers, teachers, and so many more knew her as a steady presence directing traffic in the mornings and evenings, looking out for their safety. Her dedication was more than a job; it was a calling. She ultimately gave her life in the very act of protecting the community she loved.

She enjoyed quiet times with her family, reading, working puzzles, watching movies and regular lunches and outings with her friends, known to each other as the Golden Girls.

Katy’s family is deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of support shown in recent days. The stories, messages and small acts of kindness have reminded them just how many lives she has touched. She was part of the fabric of this community, and the love shown in return has been a profound comfort.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial on Saturday, May 9 from 9:00 until the service at 12:00 at Hebron Baptist Church 24063 LA Hwy 16, Denham Springs, LA where her life, legacy, and extraordinary kindness will be honored.

Katy would have wanted in lieu of flowers that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to a local animal shelter/rescue.
