Melvin Roy Dykes, age 71, passed away peacefully at his home on July 31, 2026. A lifelong resident of Washington Parish, Melvin was a true country man through and through. He was a hardworking man who eventually retired from serving the Town of Franklinton as its Animal Control Officer.

Melvin was the kind of man who found joy in the simple, honest things in life. He loved fishing, watching a good NASCAR race, and taking his rightful place as the head chef at family cookouts. There was nothing quite like gathering family together, firing up the grill, and enjoying good food, good music, and good company. And wherever Melvin was, you could usually count on hearing the familiar sounds of classic country or southern gospel playing in the background.

But above all the things Melvin enjoyed, there were two that mattered most: his love for Jesus and his love for his family. His faith was not simply something he spoke about—it was woven into the way he lived his life. His family was his greatest blessing, and the time he spent with them was something he treasured deeply.

Melvin leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, laughter, and the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Pamela H. Dykes; his son, Lee “Bubba” Bates, Jr. (Megan); his daughters, Stephanie Creel (Talmadge) and Daphne Walters (Clint); and his eight grandchildren, Boudreaux Bates, Payton Barber, Paysley Barber, Presleigh Walters, Parker Walters, Kamden Creel, Jaiden Allemand, and August Allemand; and two nieces: Rebecca and Janet Cost.

He also leaves behind his cherished Rebel Riders family, along with countless other family members and friends who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, James and Althea Dykes.

Those honored to serve as active pallbearers, proudly carrying Melvin to his final resting place, are Lee “Bubba” Bates, Jr., Clint Walters, Talmadge Creel, Charli Riddley, Sheldon Herbert, and his Rebel Riders family.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are Kamden Creel, Boudreaux Bates, Parker Walters, August Allemand, and Jaiden Allemand.

Seale Funeral Home was entrusted with Melvin’s final arrangements and care.

Services will be private. The family lovingly asks that everyone continue to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they walk through this season of loss and remembrance.

Melvin was a country man, a family man, and a man who loved his Jesus. He lived life in his own honest and down-to-earth way, surrounded by the people, music, food, and simple pleasures he loved. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the meals gathered around, the music that fills the air, and most of all, in the hearts of those who loved him.
