Francis Michael (Mike) Stewart passed away on March 5, 2026 at age 82. He was a loving husband, son, father and friend. Family includes his wife Martha, Aunt Beverly, children Todd, Kelly, Amy, Brandy, Lexie, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. . Preceded in death by brother Grant Stewart, mother Bell Stewart and father Julius Stewart.
Mike loved all things outdoors. His favorite activities were on the water, in the air, and in the woods. He enjoyed boating, fishing, scuba diving, lobstering, water skiing, swimming, bicycle riding, walking in the woods, flying airplanes and RC model airplanes, and riding his Cushman motorcycle. Family and friends enjoyed many adventures with Captain Mike. He spent many hours teaching the young ones how to water ski, catch lobsters, ride a bike, shoot a bow & arrow, change motor oil, rotate tires, mow the grass, whittle wood, ride 4wheelers, repair lawnmowers, shoot skeet, snorkel, and the list goes on and on.
For years he enjoyed hunting, but later in life he said he preferred going into the woods with a camera. He had lots of stories to tell and most of them were long stories with plot twists and humor. His favorite stories were stuck stories that involved tires, mud, and tow chains. A friend once said Mike can fix anything from the crack of dawn to a broken heart. This was so true – cars, planes, washing machines, pretty much anything that broke. One of his friends at work called him MacGyver and said the back seat of Mike’s truck contained lots of miscellaneous items that could be used to rig up a temporary repair on almost anything.
He loved music, especially Jimmy Buffet and could sing the words to all his songs. If you got in a vehicle with Mike for a long road trip, you would hear way more Jimmy Buffet than you wanted to before you arrived at your destination. We all felt safe when we were with him – whether it was a day canoe trip that turned into overnight, funnel clouds in the sky while out in the Atlantic, rough seas, broke down vehicle, any situation. He took care of us. We always got home safely.
He loved to laugh and had the biggest brightest smile. It felt like sunshine beaming on you when he smiled. He loved reading about military aircraft, pilots especially Amelia Earhart, coral reefs, boat engines, scuba diving, anything about nature.
Thanks to his sister-in-law Irene who provided loving care during the past six years. Thanks to his caregivers: Pam, Claudette, Takita, Patrice. Thanks to Gentiva Hospice.
