Susan Shuey (née Harmon), age 77 of Kaplan, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026.
Susan Elizabeth Harmon was born on April 24, 1948, to Derwin Kay Harmon and Madeline Peace Harmon. She graduated from Opelousas High School in 1966, LSU in 1970 and LSU’s Paul M. Hebert School of Law in 1980. Prior to law school, Susan was a guidance counselor and English teacher at Baton Rouge High School.
Afterward, she lived in New Orleans, Lincolnton, Georgia, and most recently Baton Rouge. She is survived by daughters Rachel Ferguson Shuey and Kate Harmon Shuey, to whom she was endlessly devoted. As a mother she provided constant care and support spiced with sharp wit. There was no getting anything past her.
Susan was a valued elder sister to Doug Harmon, Rachal Murphy, and Lisa George, cousin to Kathy Hoggard, Myra Ortego, Steve Mead, Linda Bitter, Palma Jorgensen, Bobby Going, Cindy King, Debbie Balicki, and Molly White, and a close friend of Mary Grace, Catherine McKenzie, and Kay Humphries, and former husband James Shuey, all of whom will miss her dearly.
She loved reading mystery books, watching home improvement shows, sharing her considerable knowledge of European history, and teaching everyone she could how to properly make a roux. She had impeccable taste and wanted everyone to know that her daughters received their best traits from her.
A service in celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Friday, March 6th, 2026 at the University United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, LA. Visitation at 1pm, Memorial Service at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Retina Research Foundation, which supports research on retinal disease
