Violet Lucille May Hodges was truly one of a kind—a firecracker in every sense of the word, affectionately known as “Maw Maw” and “Mrs. V.” Maw Maw proved time and time again that personality is not measured in inches. Standing at just 4’9”, she was bold and bossy in the most endearing way, and carried a spirited, “tell it like it is” attitude that made her both unforgettable and deeply loved. A bit of a prodigal daughter in her younger years, Maw Maw lived life on her own terms, yet she always knew who her Savior was— a reflection of God’s unending mercy, grace after grace, and the beauty of forgiveness that carried her through the years and gently led her home.
Maw Maw was the undeniable life of the party—vivacious, charismatic, and full of spicy sass. She never met a stranger, and within moments, could turn any gathering into a celebration. Her energy was magnetic, her laughter loud and contagious, and her presence one that simply could not be ignored.
At the center of her world was the love of her life, her beloved Frank, (Paw Paw). The two were rarely seen apart—where one was, the other surely followed. Their love story was evident in the simplest moments, especially on the dance floor, where Maw Maw, led by her towering, tall, and handsome husband, moved with a grace and joy that made them a sweet sight to behold. They flowed together effortlessly, perfectly matched in love and in life.
Maw Maw wore many hats over the years, working intermittently as a preschool teacher and in hospitality / environmental services. However, her most cherished role was being at home. She made it a priority to be there—coffee ready in the mornings before the crack of dawn and again hot, ready and waiting for Paw Paw when he returned from work or hunting, a quiet but powerful reflection of her devotion that is rarely seen in the current generation.
She found her greatest joy in being surrounded by friends and family, especially when it meant music, dancing, and laughter or having a pot of coffee ready to welcome anyone to sit with her to slow down life and enjoy a cup or two. In her last decade she was a proud member of the Ya Ya’s Senior Line Dancing group in Denham Springs. Maw Maw danced her way through life—continuing even into her first year as a resident of Harvest Manor being one of the few that was not yet wheelchair bound. Though dementia tried to slow her down, it never took her rhythm or her spirit.
In the kitchen, Maw Maw showed her love in the most delicious ways. Her Pot Roast was a family favorite, and her homemade, old-fashioned banana pudding was simply unmatched!
Fearless, sassy, and full of life, Maw Maw leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments, good or bad, she was our Maw Maw. She lived boldly, loved deeply, and danced through every chapter of her life—always in step with the one she loved most.
