William "Billy the Kid"
Roth
Sep 25, 1942 — Sep 3, 2026
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
William “Billy the Kid” Roth, age 83, passed away peacefully in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on September 3, 2026. Billy was a man who left an impression everywhere he went. He was respected, admired, and deeply loved by the many people fortunate enough to know him.
Billy was a fighter in every sense of the word—not only in the boxing ring, but in life. He was a boxer, coach, record-holder, grandfather, father, and, to so many, simply “Pops.” As a father, Billy pushed his children hard because he believed in them, but he loved them even harder. He expected strength, perseverance, and determination, and he spent his life teaching those qualities to others through both his words and his example.
For more than 44 years, Billy quietly gave his time and his heart to teaching the sport of boxing to inmates. It was something he did voluntarily and without seeking recognition. To the men he coached, Billy became much more than a boxing instructor. He became someone they could respect, trust, and look up to. They affectionately called him “Pops,” while his late wife, Karol, became lovingly known as “Mom.” Together, they made an impact that reached far beyond the boxing ring.
Billy’s dedication and talent earned him an incredible list of accomplishments. He once held nine state records, became a nine-time state champion in powerlifting, and was named Coach of the Year multiple times. He was a three-time State Golden Gloves and Southern A.A.U. Champion and proudly served as the director and head boxing coach of the Police Academy League (PAL).
Yet, for all the titles, records, and championships Billy earned throughout his life, perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the number of lives he touched. He believed in people, challenged them to become stronger, and never hesitated to give his time to help someone find their way. His legacy will live on not only through his family, but through the countless students and players who will always remember him as their coach, their mentor, and their “Pops.”
Billy is survived by his son, Aaron “Nino” Roth; four grandchildren, Kahne Cupit (Ryan), Heath Young, Reynolds Young, and Rachael Gordon; six great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Stathan, Rohen, Harvie, Parker, and Brooks; his brother, Victor Roth (Roxanne); and a multitude of former students, players, and friends whom he loved as family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karol Roth; his daughter, Devin Young; three brothers, Walter Roth, Kenny Roth, and Louie Roth; and his sister, Gail Roth Johnson.
The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Life Source Hospice for the care, kindness, and compassion they provided to Billy and his family. Their support and dedication during his final days will always be deeply appreciated.
Billy lived a life of strength, service, and love. He taught others how to fight, but more importantly, he taught them how to stand back up, keep going, and believe in themselves. His voice may be quiet now, but the lessons he gave so freely will continue through every person he encouraged along the way.
Rest easy, Pops. Your fight is finished, but your legacy will carry on.
